Tips for a successful session

Planning a photo session can be a lot of work, and I get it. I’ve been on both sides of the camera. Our last session had my five year old running in circles, with my husband “telling” him to stop in between shots of the two of us (so romantic)…followed by our Yellow Labrador nearly ripping my arm out of its socket when a squirrel was in range. It’s normal, it’s life. Yet, having those final photos of my family makes it so worth it.

1. Selecting a photographer

Do any Google or Facebook search and you’ll have no issue finding photographers. Yet, what photographer is best for you? Having one that you’re comfortable with and understands the needs of your family is so important. I expect my clients to have questions, and being prompt and thorough with my responses is part of how I do business - simply because the more my families are prepared, the smoother the session will be.

Additionally, there are many things to consider beyond just the experience. Look carefully, and you’ll see each photographer has their own style. Do they use natural lighting or studio lighting? Dark and moody or soft and airy? Candid or posed? It’s important to select a photographer based on a style that is a reflection of your family.

My work focuses on using natural light creating images that reflect a soft, warm and airy vibe. Portfolios include a combination of posed and lifestyle photographs.

2. It’s all about the time

Yes! If you’re looking for that perfect lighting, evening sessions are the best. While I will shoot in the morning, I will strongly encourage you to aim for the late afternoon or evening (depending on the time of year). Dusk lighting, also known as the Golden Hour, is simply so much more flattering.

3. Oh what to wear

This can be so stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. My rule of thumb is three. My rule of thumb is three. This can be 1 color + 2 neutrals, 2 colors + 1 neutral or the use of only neutral colors. Feel free to mix and match print / solids, and have fun with it. Pinterest does give great suggestions, but please don’t feel like you need to buy an entire new wardrobe to successfully execute.

I suggest starting with one outfit that is a definite, and pulling in colors from there. I am a big fan of everyone being in something different. It simply looks more natural. The days of white shirts and blue jeans are long gone. I’ll encourage you to diversify…and of course can provide guidance as you’re pulling attire together. Have questions or need guidance? I am more than happy to provide feedback.

4. Be careful with mini sessions

Mini session are everywhere. They’re quick and cheaper than a regular session. I strongly believe that you can’t get a true reflection of a family in 20 minutes. Expecting your family to warm up and successfully execute in what will feel like the blink of the eye can add a lot of additional stress for the family. By investing just a few dollars more will not only will get you more time and more images, but a much more relaxed and comfortable experience.

5. Let’s get technical

I shoot in RAW instead of jpeg. The flexibility you have with RAW compared to jpeg simply doesn’t compare. Because of this, my work is not done as soon as the session ends. I do not provide RAW images to clients, because it’s not the final product. Time is spent adjusting exposure, saturation, contrast, highlights, etc. to ensure you’re receiving a final polished product.

Most photographers deliver prints digitally, and I do the same. My digital prints can print up to 20x30.’’ I will provide several suggestions of high quality printers. (Please invest in your printer just like you do with your photographer:)

Sessions are delivered within 2-3 weeks of our shoot date. During the fall, sessions may take 3-4 weeks.

6. The day arrives

It’s finally time to for your session! From the moment we meet, I am building your session’s workflow in my mind to ensure we execute the desired shots, which are prioritized on everyone’s readiness. I pay close attention to this as some little ones just need more time before they’re ready. Some do better with mom and dad near, others do better when they’re not. I will follow the cues from your family and let those guide to what will feel like a natural flow to you. Most importantly, we will have fun. I will prompt your family to ensure we capture those natural candid moments that tell your story.

7. Finally, read this

Take a deep breath and relax. I know this may sound like crazy advice, but let me work my magic while you enjoy the experience. I’ve been on both sides of the camera, and know how important capturing these moments are to you. I am preserving a memory, milestone or simply a time that will never be the same again…and that is why I love telling the story of my families from behind the lens.
